bacterial vaginosis?

had been having discharge and irritation for months and finally i got myself to go into family planning, and was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis. I am now taking flagyl 500 mg 2 a day for 7 days. I started taking them on sunday. Will this compltely cure me of bv? These pills make me kinda sick, and When does the discharge and symptoms usually start to go away?
BTW, my doctor said this is totally not trasmittable and my partner does not need to be treated.

Give yourself at least a week on antibiotics. If these are making you sick, call the doctor and see if there is anything else you can take. Flagyl has a tendency to upset your GI tract. This will cure your infection, as it is bacterial not viral. Make sure you take the full course of the antibiotics. Call the doctor, get another one, that won’t upset your stomach so much. It also helps to eat when you take the medication, also, make sure you eat yogurt with each pill, to avoid a yeast infection.

The nausea is a pretty common side effect of the Flagyl. If you have been taking it with food, try taking it on an empty stomach- if you’ve been taking it on an empty stomach, try taking it with food of some sort. Otherwise, while you are taking it, you will want to lay off the dairy products. Antibiotics have a nasty effect of killing off the good gerbies in your gut that help digest the lactose in dairy products. Without enough of those, you can have some gas or even diarrhea. As to whether or not the Flagyl will completely cure you, it can- but in a lot of cases ladies will have a second flare up inside a month, and a second round is needed. In some cases, the Flagyl seems to subdue it, but not completely and a second round of Flagyl is needed. It will work, but sometimes it does take more than one prescription’s worth. It can also do the job in one go. You should have noticed some improvement in matters by now, though. But since you’ve had it for a while, chances are that it’s going to take more than the one round to do the job. The normal bacteria in the vagina have gotten out of control, and they’ve had a fair amount of time at it. But just hang in there, and finish all the antibiotics. If the problem hasn’t gone away, just go see the doctor again for the prescrition. Two rounds most always does the trick.

the side effects are tolerable do not worry about feeling sick, it will get better gradually, it is important that your partner gets treatment as well otherwise you get infected again and again.

it should work as long as the bacteria causing the problem is sensitive to the antibiotic they gave you. probably 2-3 days til you feel better, and most importantly, FINISH YOUR MEDICATION!!!! don’t stop them when you feel better, thats how resistant bugs like mrsa happen

Flagyl is the most successful therapy for BV. Studies show that flagyl achieves early cure rates of around 90%.

You should start noticing results within 72 hours. Side effects of flagyl include a metallic taste, nausea, and peripheral neuropathy. If the side effects become too much for you, DO NOT simply stop the therapy! This will prevent the medication from curing you completely, and may create an antibiotic resistant BV infection for you (NOT FUN). Call your practitioner and she can switch you over to clindamycin, which you may find more tolerable.

BV is not technically an STD–it’s a change in normal vaginal bacteria characterized by a decrease in the normally dominant lactobacillus and an increase in other bacteria, particularly Gardnerella. While BV can be provoked by frequent sex or sex without condoms, the mechanism by which the floral imbalance occurs and the role of sexual activity is not clear. This is why it is not necessary to treat your partner.
